Exit Signs Where The Smoke Is

In elementary school, they teach you when you see or smell a fire you are supposed to crawl. That is because that is where the freshest air is as smoke rises. Makes perfect sense.

What doesn't make perfect sense is that they put the "Emergency Exit" signs near the roof. When you really need the signs, in a fire, they are on the roof - what sense does that make!
